Title
Abstract
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) aim to solve the limitations and consequently to improve the performance of ad hoc networks, wireless local area networks (WLANs), and wireless metropolitan area networks (WMANs). A typical WMN consist of mesh routers and mesh clients, where mesh routers have minimal mobility and form the backbone of WMNs. They provide network access for both mesh and conventional clients. Mesh clients can be either stationary or mobile, and can form a client mesh network among themselves and with mesh routers. In this paper we address an important issue of designing a radio aware routing metric for WMNs. We develop on previous work of routing metric design and propose a new metric based on ETT (Expected Transmission time), which is especially suited for current multi-rate radios and upcoming generation of wireless standards such as 802.11n. We compare our metric with the existing metrics and demonstrate an improved system throughput in typical scenarios.
