Title: FireSense: Firewall-Based Occupancy Sensing

Abstract: As the field of occupancy detection grows, more and more sensors are being developed or repur-posed into occupancy detectors. Each of these new sensors brings with them new fees in mainte-nance and power. FireSense is a firewall-based sensor that seeks to repurpose existing infrastruc-tureto add sensing capabilities with little overhead. The sensor monitors network traffic over the firewall coverage space and reports network traffic statistics and events. Here, we show that the information can be used for occupancy detection, but that is by no means the limit to FireSense’s abilities.
